Eve Meyer

Normally I don't immediately paint in photoshop, I usually work on a pencil sketch then add colors to it. But this one I just went straight to work.

Without really wasting too much time on each step, I'll go into some small details about it

Sorry I have not posted more then a month, been a sluggish start of the year, been more fooling around with ideas.

Recently been taking a break how I normally illustrate and just using reference photos to paint.

well originally I start by illustrating in a monotone style with shades of gray.

As i get close to what I like, I start slapping in high saturation color tone with the intention to blend them into those gray tones.

there is no real intention to be photo realistic, just try to play around with colors, what should pop what shouldn't.

learn from your mistakes, it was a wonderful experiment to play around with

just finished this piece for a friend of mine's art show

Rydia of Mist from Final Fantasy IV, a long time favorite video game character been working on it for a long time because I have high expectations of the character.

I tried referencing the DS game more then the Yoshitaka Amano art because his art is very inconsistent and hard to use as reference, even if it's beautiful and inspiring.

I won't lie I redrew her about a good 20 times, so I will spare you with every iteration, but basically I had the idea she spins around and summons a mist dragon like her mother but also her first appearance when she's older.

the line art is as close as what I want but still unhappy with her breast and her head.

But still this is a new technique I want to draw, and I'm always unhappy how my line art works and more excited to paint instead. So the lines are more mostly guideline.

I had to realign her head. It's not quite perfect, in the final version I'm still not happy with it, but I still want to have the the shoulder up close to her chin.

A new color was added into the shadows, instead of blue I added a bit of orange. I was afraid it separates the head and the body very close to one another but I do think it's interesting to have different fabrics inspired by cosplayers.

Originally I wanted to have a wing exposed to cast a shadow over her, but I don't quite think it would work if the dragon's head if lean forward so much. So I pulled it back so her hand carcasses it.

Nice detail on the jewelry and splash details were addedI'm still a bit not sure about it but I'm happy the overall color of it and movement. It's an interesting piece, I might come back and either redraw it or draw her again.

Blue Falcon and Dynomutt

A special Birthday gift to a friend Robert Mommaerts. Took me a while working on this

Originally I wanted to draw them on the jet, but I think you see that too often. So I went in with the running animation instead

I often like to see designs through different angles, sleeked up design

I always loved the silliness of dynomutt, so it felt in his character making silly faces. Although I still wanted a sleek design to dynomutt so I tried to make the expression very limited.

I redrew the pose over and over and over and over again. I'm never satisfied with just one design, want to see it in every angle.

You know as long as my work process goes, my pens just die by the time I get to doing the line work. So here it's not quite dead but it's close to it.

now this is a test composition using two different images. Even if I'm drawing over things with a blue pencil I often am not sure if it's correct seeing each individual object together.

I'm not happy how dynomutt head is turning out so I'd rather take in a previous drawing and clean that up instead.

Even just as a rough test, I'm curious in the middle of penciling this to just push it into the coloring process even though I'm not complete with the pencils.

And like that, just curious to see what colors are like, this is the best way to get me to push development of sketches to finished product.

A vague idea how colors look, especially how complicated it is in between the two characters

Cleaning up the pipe designs, now the final version is a bit too saturated in color. I kinda regret that and might refix it, but right now it's a fun piece to work on. My art process is odd but it helps me push my work.

Drink Cozy

I have been kicking around this idea for a while

and like always I tend to redraw it a billion times over

so I stooped early on and just went immediately to production of the piece.

Not drawing the glass wasn't something intentionally difficult, I felt it gave me enough room to change it if it's digital.

Very crude but still got me rolling along

this was a small piece, so I didn't feel too restricted into little detail but doing a glass with a drink inside of it was difficult but it just took me a while to render it out. Reginald is one of my favorite characters so it's fun to draw him all happy.

a gift for a friend Jill Kill a whimsical horror film fan and her loyal sidekick Darkling Dog.Took me a while working on this one, went in from about a good 8 pages of redrawing the illustration

lots of silly ideas kicking around, but not focusing on composition and making sure it works.

Now here's where I had problems I drew this around 5 times. I'll spare you all the drama, and just show you some of them

I wasn't happy how it turned out, so I was playing around with earlier sketches and putting them into the final piece.

a tighter, cleaner design, it helped me work faster

I started work on Darkling, because of the shaggy hair it's easy to get confused, and wanted his emotion to come out clear

it's fun working on the brain, just kept thinking of every single silly horror film I've seen.

Now skin is improve and the electricity from the tesla coils is moving around

now doodling designs of a Rat and a Spider, which I always wanted in the scene but didn't know exactly where and how. Now I rushed into this piece because thinking about designing the rat and the spider would have just made me procrastinate this further.

This piece was a lot of fun to work on and I'm proud how it turned out. I've doodles a billion sketches so I might do another one soon.

fighting fish of the underwater pitfighting tournament.

Been working on this for a while. I'm always insecure of my work. SO I will sketch the idea a billion times over.

there's a simple idea of a little fighting fish beating up big brutes. I might make more of a series of little fishes.

again exploring ideas of colors and style. It was a wise idea to pick Siamese fighting fish because they are so colorful easy to work with it and design a backdrop that complements their colors

trying to design the Kirby Dots. I never did anything like this digital, so it was just baby steps while still coloring the main composition.

I'm awfully insecure how I try something new, so there's about 4 different layers here, on the kirby dots, the glow in the background and each element.

masking was used to make the lines in the action a white splat over the face the show where the fish is impacting.

adding simple font with font bending effects to fallow along with the movement

this was a fun piece to work on, expressing my own sense of humor and personality. I hope to make more of these fishes in the future.

My favorite moment in Metal Gear Solid 1.

Here's a quick little tutorial video, how I do the textures.
It's a web cam, it's the best I could do.I've been kicking around this idea for a while, and of course I spend too much time sketching it out on paper well before I get into actual finished line work.

Such a difficult idea, emoting little puppies, trying to nail the personality, and also I always have fear how large I draw heads.

I'm very insecure how it came out, so I went into photoshop and fixed up the slips, so the chin and nose are more properly aligned.

Not exactly sure how the textures should work. I want there to be a bit of Green, but also the green doesn't quite come off right with the skin makes the characters look sickly.

I always had an idea this is the break down of the scene, and where exactly everything went to. and this was all temporary design of a frame. I normally make frames using water spots, but I enjoy using photoshop's generic brush tool.

It was a fun piece to work on. Reminded me why I love Metal Gear in the first place. In general I usually try hard to find the momentum to push myself to finish a piece, but if you do every single step one by one. You eventually find out you don't need that momentum and the piece finishes itself on it's own. It was great practice to use Youtube and other programs to get myself motivated to finish this piece.

"GET BEHIND LITTLE WAGON" -heavy

I believe I'm not alone when I say it's difficulty to push an idea into a finished product.

just a kernel of an idea, I wanted to sum up everything TF2 into one piece. All of the silliness and drama players have with one another.

Although the actually sketch of the piece took me a two weeks of slowly getting it done. It got to a point where I had to scan it in no matter what. Flaws and all. I knew that it'd be better that I could at least finish it up with digital colors.

There came a point where I felt drawing too much detail would actually waste time when I could fake it with colors

the original lines are pretty decent, I was insecure if the size of the characters would work, heavy being the largest character but he's huddled smaller then anyone else, and other characters are crammed in there without really explaining how they all fit in.

the problem with adding texture early on is that it's difficult to blend colors at this point, but instead I keep beside me color references using in game screenshots.

more refined detail in the coloring is added. A vague idea of the health icons and red team icon. Later I added multiple layers of color dodge to help the effects glow, and more colors were blended together. In the end it turned out really well for 2 weeks of hard work. It's easy for me to work on this, because it's the game that inspires me the most. But It's hard really summing up everything that I love about the game into one piece, but this is fairly accurate. There are players who do nothing but complain and players who work hard for others. Is it fair? Does it matter when your awesome cartoon characters with ridiculous guns that don't take much skill to use. The only thing I do regret is that I didn't capture the amount of bullets and rockets flying around at the time.
Maybe next time?

Catwoman's Cats

the hardest problem about showing behind the scene stuff is you can never predict what the reader wants to learn from my own art process. Actually I do hope to scroll down and read some of my past post explaining some of my other techniques, this blog is like 3 years old of stuff I never update.
Oh well, on this recent piece took me about 3 years conceiving it, inspired by Adam Hughes, Dean Yeagle and Aristocats. It's a bit showing how glamorous Catwoman's life style is and how she loves her cats.

I'm pretty sure I posted this last year, but the original designs of the cats come from here. I love their weight, their movement and their excitement.

this is my third time I've started drawing this scene. Sadly the head is all off so instead of redrawing it a fourth time I went in resized a small sketch and used that as the new head. Now I took like a good 3 weeks thinking it over, I really wasn't sure if it was right idea. As much a painting is really about painting over previous lines I really wanted a nice clean original line work. In a way my own insecurities get the better of me to actually improve myself.

the biggest reason why I pushed this art process was because of support from my friends. I have so much respect and admiration for artists who can do this all easily in one go, so any single little fault I have I will stop and just prevent myself from progressing my art.

At this point it was 3 in the morning, I had to stop and take a break. The texture was originally an idea that I came from coloring a pin up from Justin Coffee. Still all tempt and I had it there so I can go to sleep and think it over.

well this puts an end to a 3 year of insecurities, doubting myself and ideas that were just a small little joke in my head. Here's some nice close ups you can't notice in the resized ones

or maybe 21 dead and some of them fading because they are pretty inconsistant. I really do feel like the few exception who enjoys working with watercolors markers instead of the heavy alcohol based ones every self respecting artist uses. You know the kind that bleeds through the depths of phone books.

a little bit of a tribute to the most under rated batman characters Bud and Lou

been working on this for a while, I had a lot of difficulty on designing both Harley and Ivy. Bud and Lou were a lot of fun working on them

I had to redraw Harley and rearrange ivy from the piece.

As much as I show each of my step by steps, I actually didn't capture it on this one. I just went straight into the art and didn't stop till I was finished. While working I was thinking of making Bud and Lou not look like the Hyenas from Lion King, and added more yellow and oranges to their fur. And added a bit of Pink on Lou's nose in reference for Chip and Dale.

and also I made this barracuda design for my sister. It was fun to work on this also.

ZOMBIES!!!!

Well I was up late, watching a Fulci City of the Living Dead.... and you know what it SUCKED HARD!!!! The zombies were just big pussy maggot mess who could teleport and squeeze the brains out of your hair. And it's not so much a city, as a crypt that is poorly lit to make out.

So I decided to just doodle my own take on Zombies

Basically my inspiration for Zombies are just from the music video Thriller. I love the green neon light that comes below the sewer as the large fat blue man comes out. Oh that scared me a kiddie, and the man who vomits out black stuff. That's the kind of Zombies I love. That or Return of the Living Dead Zombies are so much fun and I'm impressed how Walking Dead's Zombie make up. But I love color with my zombies, greens, yellows, blue and lots of exposed organs. I really shy away from flesh tones.... that or my favorite zombie of all time..... the Crypt Keeper

kinda busy with other things, sketching up ideas for a dream video game concept. It's not in development, just kicking around ideas
Oh well, I love scanning in my own textures. So I found some paper bags and some cardboard boxes. Scanned them in high resolution, in photoshop I usually tweak up the levels to make sure things pop more and also include color value changes in order for it to change a bit.

I was never crazy about using textures off of the internet. A lot of that is because of resolution problems, but I do enjoy just finding and discovering my own textures and it's something that it's quite simple. It adds that little bit of personal taste that you can't find anywhere else.

classic children joke that never gets old

Just got a new pen for my tablet, I feel a bit rusty doing this in fact I was dragging my feet throughout the line art part of this.

flat colors to help understand which character stand out. A more maroon/purple backdrop to contrast the green and and blue of the gator's skin.

And here's the texture, basically it's two layers, the same one actually

Simple shading, the idea that there more blocks you can always break apart, so sometimes they can be

the text was added to help me know where to locate it in the composition.

now I just just tweaked the color values on the gator in the back in order to make him pop out more. And some blue was added into the background to make sure his colors contrast from the Baboon who has similar values.

Closer to the end, more lighter colors to help pop out.

Overall it was difficult to start but as I progressed I got into the rhythm of it.

for the past two years I've been having problems with my intuo 2 pen.... aside from the fact my tablet is over 8 years old and that wacom stopped supporting it. So I've been hesitant to take any steps to correct this. So for the past two years, I'd have weird inconsistent problems with my art, like it had a lump in the middle of a brush stroke or stop getting connection from the tablet. As always I found work arounds to extend the life of this tablet well beyond then it should have been.
And now again I continue that with a new Grip Pen. The good news is I can now work on photoshop, so you might be seeing some new art using the watercolor technique I had before. I'll be experimenting around for new ideas, I'm just happy it works now. Instead of using the eraser end like I did before.

I know the forearm is off, and I knew it was an akward pose to begin with. It's a pose I felt had power to it, and excited me to design a background around it.
Here are my early sketches, as you can see I had a concept for a background and a design of a woman. Multiple cavewomen? Yeah, I'll save that for later

I had lost the layer with the raptors on them, so I had to redraw them. Her face is actually changing from her on end, along with her arm. I kept flipping around the composition to get better angles. It's always tricky

Again, different head shape on the girl, I actually liked the look of her eyes, but the head was too large from the body.

More defined detailed on the raptors and colors, this technique basic is going in at full resolution, defining the darkest tone, and then blending in softer shades and just blending it in there. I like to think of it more like building blocks.

It was a fun piece to work on and I hope to do another cave girl soon.

Dejah Thoris

I'd like to thank Sinistar1 for his inspiration and help on this piece
here's my work process. Originally it started as a rough sketch from seeing Sinistar1's original piece. I don't know much about Dejah, only from Frazetta art. So I went for a classic pin up style with a touch of Art Adams inspiration.

so I just went immediately to work with a rough shapes and composition. Now there was a pale blue background because it'd help to work as an opposite value from the core flesh tones.

Closer to the final color scheme I wanted. No idea how the left will end up, but basically the main theme is just Dejah with a Banth beside her.

Now her jewelery is coming out, rough idea, for a while I wanted a decapitated head, and a sword beside her, but I didn't like how the hand would look if it was half gesturing to come forward. The Jewelery head dress design, is inspired by a Frank Frazetta piece.

Now more fleshed out, the lava style floor, another idea from a frazetta paintings I keep seeing. Although I must confess the legs look odd, I needed to fix that.

Now I ditched the head dress design into something closer to my original sketches. The shape and form of the body is closer to how I wanted it to me, except longer legs. Now Sinistar advised me to arch her back back, but I opted against his sage advice and wanted something more in a curvey shape. So I'd like the records to show that the advice was given to me, and I went along without it.
I started to paint away the pale blue and wanted more pink to go along with her orange skin tone. I didn't want a high contrast of colors, the blue would have worked but I thought it added a bit more mystical theme with the purple.

Achievement Whoring

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I bought Batman Arkham Asylum on steam when it was on sale. Now I was holding out for Joker DLC, but sadly that never happened. Well, now I got every single achievement in the game so basicly I should go back to drawing..... but instead I turned my attention to other video games to check to see if there any other easy achievements to get. It's one of those moments where I start with the easy achievements and then I'm devoting an entire weekend onto getting super hard achievements.

By the way, I'm sharing my account with my cousin who has it tied with his children 360.
But anyway I have been sketching while the games are loading..... luckily Arkham Asylum has so little loading so it's very little from actual fighting.

Working on Bud and Lou, Joker and Harley's Pet Hyenas. Hyenas are so cute, didn't want to make them look vicious like they look on the animated series.

I love Harley and Ivy a lot, but I felt like there wasn't enough of an effort most artist trying to make them different. I do think it's funny as cartoon characters if they look the same but I do think they should be individuals in one form or another. Ivy has higher cheek bones, smaller eyes, longer legs larger bust, and Harley is rounder larger bottom, thicker hips large eyes for expression and a round happy smile

I actually don't mind the redesigns of Harley and Ivy in Arkham Asylum, the game felt a lot like reading a Graphic novel by Simon Bisley. But I did feel the motion capture and animation was a bit off since it didn't show them as cartoon characters. The Joy of Harley is really giver her really silly expressions because Arleen Sorkin's voice is AMAZING! One minute she's squeaky then the next she's crackling loud, the game's motion capture made her look like a cheap stripper, but then again everyone in the game is on steroids. Jim Gordon looks like he stomach crunches 3000 times a day and eats gravel. It's a style change I can live with.

To be honest I feel insecure how I draw women, so I'm like just going through a phase of analyzing my own work. Just working around eye size, and body shape.

I'm debating about doing an Arkham Asylum redesign cover, because the game should literally be just "BATMAN IN A MOSH PIT!" instead of Batman just casually standing there looking a bit lost.

I love Spaghetti Western movie posters, so I aimed for that grittiness. The textures were done with a napkin and a folded up sheet of paper with incress levels and layer options set to overlay.

I must confess I haven't seen How to Train Your Dragon yet. I just had this urge to draw dragons at least how to appeal to the inner 8 year old in me.

A bit of inspiration from Metal Gear Ray, it has such an organic design, hard not to be inspired by that.

A lot of my inspiration came from Final Fantasy Tactics and Record of the Lodoss Wars series. More so Tactics because they showed a lot of shape in such small sprites.

Hard for me to resist drawing crazy spikes, and billion scales, because as a kiddie I would get stuck doing that.

I was late to sent this piece for the Pixel Love art show for Michele Legendre. Still it's my favorite scene from Metal Gear Solid 3

I have a soft spot for big boss, so it took me a while trying to work on this piece.

I even painted it in water colors, it came out horrible, but it was a good warm up. I'll come back to it later down the line in a much better format.

Wicked Child

Alucard and Maria Renard along with familars and Richter Belmont and 3 coffins from Castlevania - Symphony of the Night. Made for Michele Lengendre upcoming Pixel Love art show.

If your asking why it's upside down, well basicly in order to unlock the true ending you must kill the green orb controlling Richter Belmont, and then replay the game with the inverted castle. But also the parallels of characters of Castlevania 3 and Symphony of the night which later on you fight them as zombies.

Maria is such a fun character to draw, I might draw her again. I added mostly all her animal friends from Rondo of Blood.

Some rough color studies, again it was fun drawing Maria, because of her long hair and the green is such a vibrant color to use instead of making someone look sickly.

Of course, I originally started working on this right side up. But I was sketching out ideas how to best display the characters and show off the coffins, and classic Symphony of the Night shot of Richter on Dracula's chair.

Richter was changed in order to make him stand out more then just fade into the background. There was a point where he was going to hold a wine glass, but I opted out. And also a rough idea where the animals will be, because I didn't know how much space they would take up in the composition. It was a difficult piece to design because there's a lot going on and I was uncertain if it'd be a mess.

Background coming along, super simple, and a bit desaturated in order to not be center of attention. Coffins are now designed and moved up in order to know how they would stick out from the main characters. And all of the familars are now layed out

Now understanding how it looked flipped around

I had such a hard time with this piece, a lot of it is because I lost the Richter Belmont layer close to the end and had to repaint him completely.

Finally closer to the final piece, more refine little details and more blending the familars into the backgrounds so they don't clash with one another.

Bloody Tears

A new castlevania 3 - Dracula's Curse piece, staring Trevor Belmont, Alucard, Sypha Belnades, and Grant Danasty made for Michele Legendre's upcoming Pixel Love art show. I'm so excited to participate in this and it gives me an excuse to be a video game nerd

now a brief behind the scenes of this development.
This has been in development for a month, long time just studying crypts. But still the idea is focusing on the heroes, so I just jumped into it and immediately drew the crypt with rough idea of the heroes.

Now carving out the shape of the heroes I designed shapes of the monsters. Making them more into shadows then actual designs of individual monsters.

Now sharper designs of each monster, fallowing sprites from the game. Except for Peeping eye, which is a monster I always enjoyed. Alucard's face was something I was getting annoyed with. So I decided to redraw him on a separate sheet of paper. I deeply considered redesigning his Costume since I was basing it off of Castlevania 3, but still his design from Symphony of the night is so iconic it's hard to eliminate all of it. So I went for a sleeker design

Now some early color schemes, I always intended to wash out the contrast as they blended into the colors of the background but also showcasing their own individual color schemes.

Now the effects around each character, to help illustrate their color schemes individually.

Now focusing on the background. There has to be two or three different colors on the wall, helps give the illusion of dirt and grime but still keeping that one color sceme. Also if you notice Trevor keeps getting his face redrawn but more importantly there's now another arm, helping him get some balance in his body movement. It's always a work in progress.

That's about it, until we get to the SUPER TIGHT Detail to enjoy.

Castlevania's Simon Belmont made for Michele Legendre Pixel Love show

Unlike before where I went step by step, I think there were way too many steps on this. I'll show a bit of the early work
Early on it was a super rough make

Although originally I didn't design the face as detailed, it was suppose to be super rough. Still it was a fun experence trying to go something more detailed then simple shapes.

The hair was changed to look more in motion, but also more skeletons were added. Now it's still debatable if the scene is too crowded, but still the skeletons have a simple color scheme to them. In the final design they have more color variations because they express a lot for just simple army of the damned. Still it was fun making characters for each of them even though they are all based on enemies in previous castlevania games.

Freddy vs Tina

classic moment of the greatest film of all time. Some of my work process of working on this piece.
A rough break down where they should layout in the composition

Now blocked out with simple shapes, the colors at least lay down how each of them should dynamically differ from one another

now some more broken down the shapes. Still have the round shape to freddy's face, which also helps at least tell me where the colors should be. The cloud design isn't final when designed, it's there to at least get the idea how to it should be broken down so at least I know where it should stay away from the composition.

Thanks to working all digital I'm able to not feel too constricted with my original design. Originally this was a sketch I came out with a year and a half ago, and I'd have so much trouble redrawing it over and over again. A lot of ideas like "The fist should be more pointed out," or "maybe a more vicious laughing expression?" Any little idea I'd start from scratch but in digital I can incorporate it and go with the flow.

The head on the bald nerd, I was able to simply elongate it so you can see closer into his teeth design.

The original design made it look like Power Girl was kicking them, when instead I wanted her to come closer to them. Now there's small amounts of colors splashed into the face.

More simple colors added into the scene to help me understand how different they would be be compared with one another.

more and more detail added to their faces and bodies, smoothing them out. The Bald Nerd gets less of a pimple nose

A lot more smoothing out Power Girl's face, was worried about applying a thick line to the painter style.

More detail on the nerds, the hands were changed in order for there to be more of an interaction with one another. The Super Small fat hands was inspired by Tim Burton designs. And more color to Power Girl's leg that's two contrasting color values.

Now a gray background

Boots and gloves now added to Power Girl. I really wanted a nice elongated tip to power girl's boots then just pumps.

Closer to the final version, more little small detail to Power Girl, making it Sharper. The Laughters are all done in painter, I removed the comic title because I wanted to added that with cleaner fonts in photoshop.

Overall it's wonderful to get this all done and in a style I didn't expect.

First time I did a cartoon all digital even the concept. I've had this idea of super girl walking Krypto for a year now. Just needed a new style to get me out of the slump of my regular method.

It was a simple idea, and I knew the basic composition that I was going for. I had to resize the heads because I am very insecure with my proportions, even for cartoons.

Actually I had copied super girl's face to keep those color values close by when I needed to go in deeper details.

now for some work in progress screen caps, simple enough blocky break down so I know where I would go. I'm working from muted muddy tones. So that I can establish the tones before I add colors. It's a way to organize things better.

again, you can see on the face, higher saturated colors are placed on there. Then it's all about blending them into the dull tones

the best thing about painting, is if you make a mistake, you can paint over it. I messed up the alignment of the eyes, nose and lips. Just shifted them up and painted over them

almost done, but now better definition of the background. Backgrounds aren't center of attention, so I wanted to establish shapes and spotlights with heat and warmth.

well first thing first, I'm having problems reclaiming my deactivated account from DA, apparently I'm "gone" but there's over a 100 of my art there and my print account still active in the past month I had over 200 faves. It feels scary that my art is kinda lost in the DA void, considering they keep saying in their fine print on deactivation my account will delete my art and prints. Maybe I slipped when they changed their formats?
I'm still drawing but haven't finished anything officially. I'm in this whole "self critical stage" where I draw something then just nit pick it till I can't draw for an entire day. I was hoping Fluoxetine would get me out of that.
I don't know what I'm doing soon... but... I don't know if I should make a new account? Secure a URL with my name on it? Make a silly comic? But I got this second wind in me... and I'm pushing myself even if it's a baby step I'm pushing myself out of this.

Yeah, spilled wine on this one at Shane Corne's Mondo Gelato Drawing Jam. Shane Glines was trying to cheer me up "Hey don't worry, it looks like a cool ink wash piece."

The Women of San Diego, I love the feathered hair homeless man in the middle right. He had a tweed suit and he kept yelling at anyone who was in front of him. Very colorful city San Diego

Because of waiting in line, standing up.... and well I only got like 2 hours of sleep from sleeping in a hotel toilet, I kept falling asleep on every panel I attended. So my solution, I kept drawing anyone who was on the panel, Sergio Aragones and Stan Saki were super expressive and perfect models.... without boobs

Waiting in line for the True Blood panel, Which took 2 HOURS WAITING! We would just stop the line in order to stay in the shade, there's a lot of people there with sunburns because they were waiting in line. And a drunken drawing from Drink and Draw.

okay some of screen caps if my work process

well this was a piece I had more problems with then my last three.

My main concern was composition, and building enough space with a crowd of cats and giving them enough of a stage to express themselves.

and it took me a while to get to here. Simple flat colors, I knew I'd change their colors as I was working on it. But I knew I wanted to shift the tones from blue to amber.

just working on the shading immediately. Like in the last pieces, I work on the easiest characters immediately. I've been working on the cat and rat for a while, I knew where I'd go with them color wise.

now just going out into the background building up the light direction. Want it to feel as if it was a spotlight.

Originally this cat was the same blue hue as the Rat, tweeked around with the settings. And made him purple, so he can stand out. Added some white, which could be his own color, but also helps bring out the lamp behind him.

I love rendering out glass and rum in color. It's something simple, or at least I'm so used to it. But like after the first time you study how light hits glass, then it's trapped in your mind forever.

dressing up the audience, can't have them naked. That would be indecent.

Now this is difficult, the cat has his face pressed up to the glass. Now how this works is there should be little light to what is pushed up against the glass. Even if the glass is in front of a light, the lighting should be different then his body. So I went with a brownish hue, darken those areas and highlighted whats around him.

now desaturated the color of the up close glass. It's not the best, but it works to get the idea across.

Adding the layer option of color dodge to pop out the light

finally there, but I needed to tweak up the colors to help direct the viewer's attention.

part 3, Building from a wreck

It's a personal series for me.
Well here's the work in progress

early on it's a bit messy, very crude lines, but I'm expecting this to be a difficult piece, because there is so much geometry to color in.

again started coloring my main subject, started with the darkest tone instead of the color I laid out on the flats.

then working on the cat head

it's still very crude, but it's all about moving myself from object to object. Getting use to the terrain and getting a feel how I want the colors to shape out.

this looks like a drastic jump, but really not as much, just basic shadows to again get the feeling. In fact there are lots of holes in there, that I had to come in later and close them up because they were way too pronounced.

Color dodge was used on the lights, a duplicated layer with lower opacity helps to make it brighter, but there's a balance because the center gets intensifies and the outer edge fades according.

The reason why I did this was because I kept coming up with sketches and ideas of how this would turn out. So Here's some rough concept sketches, please ignor the castlevania fanart

I start with flats, use the same color pallet from the last piece

I usually start any piece with the largest body. So I go with the rat's fur

Slight detail on the rat's ears and tail.

simple color for the bandages

early light glow. like he's walking away from the scene.

I had to redo the fur, more shadow in order to get the lighting correct.

now changing the lighting on all the smaller details, the puppet, the nose, the bandages, and added a slight green rim light. It helps pop things up.

my art without any lines or texture. For all those who wanted to see what it looks like underneath. It looks sloppy because I work with the layers above, which helps because the textures do solve all the problems I have with my coloring.

finally added a layer above with color dodge to pop up the highlights. It effects the lines, and effects other colors, it helps add more character to the coloring.

well here's some work in progress

Original line work had whiskers on the mouse. It was an accident that happen while inking it, thank god for photoshop

my layouts for the colors. Wanted to have a sense of distance between the colors, even though the BG is blue and the foreground rat is blue also.

Working on the cat immediately because it head takes up so much space and is going to be one with a lot of shape and definition.

and finally adding rim light, using the background as inspiration for the light that would bounce back. Or the Table for the orange hue to the mouse. Both of them have a style of lighting that helps them pop out.

Fairies are concerned with insect cruelty.

It's an older sketch, I worked on a few years ago I came back to. Although this time I fleshed out the frog design a wonderful excuse to study animals more. Instead of going more strict and detailed design, I went with this more sillier concept. Man he'd make a great puppet.

I actually redrew her 3 times, Just wanted to go with less thick lines to make her thinner then most of my standard women designs. Still the thicker arms help show her Sass.

I had problem developing the skin. I wanted her to be pale, and working with the textures it was hard to tell if I was going the right way. So I went with one ext ream color scheme, and then shift the hues to get to something closer to what I wanted

added some pink tones. This is all a base, I would later start to paint something closer to what I want.

just like before, I didn't know where to start with so many colors on the frog, I started with a base so I could get an idea of the shape.

Now I didn't change the hue, instead I immediately painted over in a simple base.

It's been crude work for a while, but I'm happy with the results, it's one of those pieces where it grows on me the more I spent time apart from it.

I did this one fairly quickly, nothing bad, but also I'M SOOOOOO Consumed with TF2 that it's easy for me to get distracted. Here's some step by steps, check'em out

I had a problem with the head, so I shifted it down and to the right

added another green texture, which it's in the moonlight, while purple is bringing in the glow.

the fish was a lot of fun to work on. I'd like to imagine he's going to eat that fish later. He's kept in the bowl for later, and his music so inspiring that the fish doesn't care about his inevitable doom.

a sketch I've had lying around for a few months. My girlfriend has been reassuring me that this would make an excellent finished piece. So this is a wonderful time to surprise her with an early Valentine's day gift.

well, I was going through a theme of girls and pets. Might make some more later. I'm a bit self conscious how the cat turned out, but I know he's being scratched so I could get away with a bit. Still I studied Persian cats..... ugly things. Since I have an superior Tabby

just started working on the girl immediately. She's a wonderful body, it's something I just was eager to shape as I was originally doing the line art.

love to show behind the layers, because textures steal the show.

it was a quick moving piece, half of what slows me down is really just feeling pressured to design on colors of elements. I don't work with broad strokes, I just work one element at a time. It's at the end I work in broad strokes.

once I got to this point I add broad strokes of colors that I wished to blend to one another. I designed a sloppy wallpaper, only because I knew it'd be covered by textures. But still the design works as an overlay, and anything on a bright surface disappeared so I inversed it, and made it screen. It's a subtle effect, but still reduced the opacity because I didn't want it to dominate the composition.

some of my work in progress while I was working on the piece, I hope you enjoy it

it wasn't the art style alone I was inspired by, but actually the technique it was used. All things considered, the HL2 engine is over 5 years old, games that are over 3 years old look terrible about now. So it's quite admirable they were able to make the game not look plastic dolls. Still I was inspired by the Iris blur and the noise in the shadows, it's an art technique that I was interested in playing around. So this was just a test to see if it could work.

I find it somewhat motivating to work in elements. Now this is just to get just the simple shadows and shapes down, when I'm near the end I'll blend, and shade in more broad stroke that help blend together with the final composition.

Your missing a lot from a resize image that's up on your monitor. There are grains of the paper, when the ink tappers off and starts to slowly show each individual brush hair, or the ink droplets that come when you quick turn the motion of a brush these are little details that I just relish as I was coloring Justin Coffee's work. As I'm working on the contours and the planes, all of this seems just second nature just because how well defined his line work is. For me it seems like Justin already planed out the colors before hand and each line was directing me where to go next. I can't emphasize how much of a privilege it is to work on coloring his art.

So with that in mind, the highly anticipated "Cream and Sugar, the art of Justin Coffee" is FINALLY coming out.

Like I was saying before, just sharing our work on DA isn't really enough. Just having it tangible you will be able to notice all those little subtle distinction that we go through in working on our art. That is the nuance that continues to push us as artists.

Just finished coloring in the line art to my girlfriend's catwoman pin up.

I had a lot of fun working on this piece. Gave me a good opportunity to find lots of textures to experiment with

I'm just personally proud of this right here with this kitten. Here's a super tight close up, something your not going to find in a resized image

Yeah, the Vinyl was originally the hard part. I had to research it so I could at least get something close to it, but still stay stylized that it doesn't feel like this painful rendering that's almost photo realistic.

but let give you a word of advice, orange on the face is always tricky. I had to tone it down with the backdrop and everything so she had a more appealing face. And by the way, the kitten is referenced off my own cat.

I had the wonderful opportunity to work as colorist on this piece

Just really wanted to pop it out, in the spirit of an old Disney cartoon.

Trying to use the original Donald Duck screen grab didn't help as reference because it was too muted and toned down.

So I had add another layer, of a solid orange, set the layer to "saturate." Sorry the image is pretty large
